HOW I GRADE TONEWOODS

Soundboard Grading - I use the common system of Master Grade, AAA, AA and A designations. I consider straightness of grain, lack of runout, stiffness of the piece across the grain, and verticality of the grain in determining grade. Where my grading differs is in cosmetic appearance of a soundboard. I do not necessarily downgrade a soundboard for aesthetic features of coloration if it has all of the other characteristics of that particular grade. I feel that it is important for luthiers to make use of otherwise excellent soundboards which may not be uniformly colored. In light of shrinking supplies of tonewood world wide, this can help to make better use of limited resources. Luthiers are in a position to be able to educate their clients about these wood choices and change the definition of what is acceptable as an excellent soundboard. To me it is a more sustainable use of what is available to us to make use of more than just monocolored pieces.

Back and Side Grading - generally, I use the common standards for grading with regard to the amount of figure, degree of coloration and straightness of grain .
